The Department of Chemistry was established in 1951 and is situated in the picturesque surroundings on the College Campus. It offers instructions to 10+1(Med & Non.Med),10+2(Med & Non.Med), B.Sc (Med & Non.Med), B.Sc (Biotechnology), B.Sc (Home Science) students. The Department of Chemistry is rated as one of the best department in the college for its teaching and research activities. Department of Chemistry has received funds from DBT Star College Scheme and CPE. It has also been identified by the DST under FIST – I and FIST – II programmes. The department has stimulating undergraduate teaching programmes. This department has created a deep and extensive impact on the quality of Chemistry education in the region. Department organizes various activities and workshops from time to time inorder to inculcate scientific temper and research aptitude in the students. The department has good instrumental facilities such as Double beam UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, Single Beam UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, Rotavapor, Temperature controlled Magnetic Stirrer,Turbidity Meter, pH  meter, Colorimeter, TDS Meter, Refractrometer, Overhead Stirrer , Polarimeter  and good computer facilities for carrying out advanced research. The library of the Chemistry department is well equipped with latest books, journals and research papers. The department is well-known for its research activities and has very well equipped research laboratory. The main areas of research include: colloidal chemistry (micelles and microemulsions) and smart materials.
In the new session 2018-19 the Department of Chemistry is offering a new course M.Sc Chemistry under continuous evaluation system which provides opportunities to the students to work in modern, state-of-the-art laboratories; where the students can groom their chosen cluster and prepare themselves to get lucrative jobs in research and industry; career in education and the possibility to follow part of their programme abroad.
