Uniforms of Safai Karamchari Stitched by KMV Students A KMV-Municipal Corporation Jalandhar Collaboration

     
Kanya Maha Vidyalaya- the Heritage & Autonomous institution, Ranked No.1 in India by India Today Ranking organized Swach Sashakt Bharat programme in collaboration with Municipal Corporation Jalandhar. A unique initiative was taken by the students of PG Department of Fashion Designing & Merchandising who stitched uniforms for Safai Karamcharis. These uniforms were distributed during a function organized at KMV which witnessed the presence of Mr Lakra, Commissioner, Mrs Aashika Jain, Joint Commissioner among others. The uniforms were prepared by co-design method which involves the customer in the design process. Students visited 8 dumps and took individual measurements of 120 Safai Karamcharis. They provided them with a smart uniform and unique identity jackets. Mr Lakra, Commissioner present on the occasion emphasized that the function was organized so that the Safai Karamcharis would be motivated to get their daughters educated in this prestigious institution. In her address, Principal Prof.(Dr.) Atima Sharma Dwivedi averred that the institution was ready to offer free education to the daughters of this socially deprived section of the society. She also lauded the efforts of the students and maintained that the students are not only learning to earn but also to give back to society as well. It is pertinent to mention that many practical initiatives have been taken by the PG Department of Fashion Designing & Merchandising & the NSS unit of KMV in making a clean, green and healthy surroundings. They took up the noble cause of visiting the waste collectors in the areas around the college. It is imperative to mention that the designer students created beautiful up cycled bags out of the waste textile cuttings generated out of this project. These up cycled bags gave the message of using non plastic bags which are environment friendly. The Commissioner felicitated Madam Principal with an appreciation letter for her excellent role as a leader. Dr Harpreet Kaur, Head, PG Department of Fashion Designing & Mrs Ashima Sahni, Incharge NSS unit of the college were also honoured with appreciation letters for their remarkable contribution to this project.
